It has been shown to be an e cient mechanism for supporting nested object queries [6]. In this paper, we present a new method, called the path dictionary index method, which combines indexing techniques with the path dictionary method. We describe the operations of the new mechanism and develop cost models for its storage overhead and query and update costs. Finally, we compare the new mechanism to the path index method [3]. The result shows that the path dictionary index method is signi cantly better than the path index method over a wide range of parameters.

Signature Path Dictionary for Nested Object Query Processing - Computers and Communications, 1996., Conference Proceedings of the 1996 IEEE Fifteenth Annual Inte

Predicate evaluation and object traversal are two critical issues for nested object query processing. Aiming at these two issues, we introduce a new method, the signature path dictionary, which combines signature techniques with the path dictionary organization designed for fast object traversals. We derive cost formulae for its storage overhead as well as the retrieval and update costs. Compar...

Definition and Analysis of Index Organizations Forobject - Oriented Database

| The eecient execution of queries in object-oriented databases requires the design of spe-ciic indexing techniques, to eeciently deal with predicates against nested attributes or against class inheritance hierarchies. Indexing techniques so far proposed can be classiied into three groups: inheritance indexing techniques, whose goal is to support queries along inheritance hierarchies; aggregati...
